On Monday, April 29, 2024, the students of the 2nd Semester BSc. Electrical Engineering, UET Mardan, embarked on a one-day study tour to Hattar Industrial Estate in Haripur. The office of Hattar Industrial Association warmly welcomed all the students along with Dr. Jawad Ali, Manager of Industrial Linkages, and Engr. Salman Saleem, Tour Incharge, EED. The office briefly discussed the role of academia in accelerating industrialization, after which the students were served refreshments.

The students then visited the Bestway Cement PVT Ltd. Factory, where they were received by Engr. Shakir Hussain, Deputy Head of Department of Electrical and Instrumentation. Mr. Haroon Rasheed, Head of Quality and Control, briefed the students about various sections and departments of the factory, while a safety instructor shared basic safety and security precautions.

Accompanied by electrical supervisory staff, the students toured the company's 25MW solar power plant, internal feeders unit, steam turbines, crushing units, and heating furnaces. The staff explained the stepwise production and utilization of electrical power in the factory.

Additionally, the students visited Horizon Paper and Board Mills, where they observed the paper production process and power generation facilities. Equipped with a power boiler and turbine capable of generating 5 megawatts of power, the factory uses steam produced by the boiler to drive the turbine for electricity generation, as well as in various paper production processes such as pulping and drying. The factory produces a range of papers for packaging purposes, including kraft, sack, and speciality papers. The paper production process is highly automated, with minimal human intervention.

To unwind after a long day, the students enjoyed a recreational tour to Barakoh and Centaurus in the capital city of Islamabad. Such industrial visits pave the way for mutual benefits between academia and industry by facilitating the exchange of outcome and experience-based technical knowledge.
